The Monarch

Canada is a constitutional monarchy. Since 1534, when the King of France claimed what is now Canada, our country's history has been marked by the uninterrupted reign of monarchs — French or British — who have profoundly influenced our nation's development.

Queen Elizabeth II was the first sovereign of Canada to be proclaimed separately Queen of Canada in 1953, when a Canadian law, the Royal Style and Titles Act, officially conferred upon her the title "Queen of Canada." This proclamation reaffirmed that the role of the monarch in Canada was independent of the role of the monarch in the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms.

As constitutional monarch, His Majesty King Charles III does not "rule" the country, but he is nonetheless part of our governmental system and our identity as head of the Canadian state.

The Role of the King

As the embodiment of the Crown, His Majesty's role is to unite Canadians and inspire a collective sense of belonging to our country.

At his Accession Council declaration on September 10, 2022, His Majesty King Charles III said:

I am deeply aware of this great inheritance, the duties and the heavy responsibilities of sovereignty which have now passed to me. In taking up these responsibilities, I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set in upholding constitutional government and to seek the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of […] the Realms and Territories of the Commonwealth throughout the world.

Newly arrived Canadians, members of the federal Parliament, provincial and territorial legislatures, the military and police all swear an oath of allegiance to the King.

We do not pledge allegiance to a document (constitution) or a political entity. We pledge allegiance to a person who embodies all of these elements as well as our collective values.
